Bergan (Bergen) — a British Army rucksack compatible with the PLCE system. The toughness of this rucksack is legendary; it is a seriously sturdy pack that will easily hold all your clothing and equipment. Back rigidity is provided by an aluminium frame made of three plates. The large top "hood" has two zipped compartments and closes the main compartment with two Fastex buckles. The large single main compartment with top access is protected by a waterproof flap with a drawcord.

Two versions of this rucksack were developed for two different applications.
"Short Convoluted" — a somewhat shortened version of the rucksack, intended for use by personnel up to 180 cm tall, and allowing the rucksack to be used together with a webbing belt load-carrying system. An additional advantage of this combination is that the rucksack can be adjusted so that it rests on the pouches of the belt system on the back, thereby transferring part of the rucksack's weight to the belt.
"Long Convoluted" — this version is intended for those over 180 cm tall, or those who do not use a belt load-carrying system.
As for the name, "Bergan" is an adaptation of the name of the Norwegian rucksack manufacturer Bergans, while the alternative "Bergen" appears to be a case of confusing the brand name with the city of Bergen, Norway.
Personal Load Carrying Equipment (PLCE) is the tactical load-carrying system of the British armed forces. The basic configuration consists of a belt, shoulder straps and pouches. Associated with the PLCE load-carrying system is a range of other similar load-carrying equipment, individual items and rucksacks, which are made from the same materials and are compatible with the PLCE system.
